The lifecycle

The states a work order moves through.

A digital work order is not a sheet on a screen. It is an order with a state, and that state is what keeps the floor and the office looking at the same thing.

    Received

    The production order arrives from the ERP. What has to be made and how many, with no machine or moment yet.

    Scheduled

    The order gets a line and a place in the sequence. From here the floor knows what is coming.

    Started

    The operator starts the order on the screen at the line. Time recording runs from that moment, not from filling in a sheet afterwards.

    Interrupted

    Downtime, a changeover, or another order taking priority. With a reason attached, because an interruption without one is a hole in your figures.

    Reported complete

    Good count, reject count, and the time it actually took.

    Reported back to the ERP

    The quantities go back to the order in the ERP. Nobody retypes anything.

Work that is not on an order, helping out or a repair, is registered as indirect time with a reason. Hide it inside the order and that order looks more expensive than it was.

Five questions about digital work orders.

Does the work order come from our ERP?
Yes, that is the intent. The ERP decides what has to be made and holds the order; we take that production order and turn it into execution on the floor. The quantities and the time the floor registers go back. Your ERP stays in charge of the order itself.
What if there is no screen at the machine?
Then one goes up. Usually an affordable touchscreen per line, not a pc per operator. Where that really is not possible, the shift lead registers for the line. That is less fine-grained, but it stays digital.
Can an operator deviate from the order?
Yes, and that matters more than it sounds. A system that makes deviating impossible gets worked around on paper. They can produce less, give a reason, or interrupt the order. Whatever they do is recorded.
What about work that is not on an order?
It exists on every floor: helping out on another line, a changeover that runs long, a repair. You register it as indirect time with a reason, so it stays out of the order cost but still becomes visible. Hide it inside the order and that order looks more expensive than it was.
Does the paper disappear completely?
On the floor yes, but not everywhere at once. We usually start on one line and run it alongside the paper for a while so you can compare. If it holds up, the paper goes on that line, and only then on the next.

A closed work order tells you the job is done. Add production and you also see how it went: pace, stops, and where the time disappeared.

Quality

The check belongs on the work order, not on a second sheet. Together the operator registers once and the measurement is already attached to the right order.

Traceability

What gets registered here is exactly what you need three years later. Entered digitally means findable, instead of archive work.
