What is MES software?
A Manufacturing Execution System manages execution on your shop floor: which work order runs on which machine, how many parts were good and rejected, how long a stop lasted and why. Here it's the Production module of the MOM platform, which puts that registration on the same data layer as quality, maintenance and planning.
Does this replace our ERP?
No. Your ERP manages your business: orders, purchasing, stock, invoicing. MES manages the execution of it on the floor. The production order comes from your ERP, and the quantities and hours go back. The two sit side by side, and most manufacturers need both.
Do we need MES or MOM?
If you don't know what's running today, you start with execution, and that is MES. The difference is what can join later. With that execution on a MOM platform, quality, maintenance and planning hang on the same data the moment you switch them on. In a standalone system, you're connecting systems to each other later.
Do all our machines need to be connected?
No. We start with the machines that can report their data, and there are usually more of those than expected. An older machine gets a sensor, or registration happens by hand on the screen. That's coarser, and your numbers show it as such.
How long does an implementation take?
It depends on the number of lines and the integrations, so a fixed timeline would be a guess. At Moerman NV it went from a pilot in December to running in production in February, on two machine lines. We start small, so you can see after the first line whether it works.
